13.8.1.1 Photodamage (actinic keratosis)

Prescribing notes

  • Actinic keratoses are pre-malignant but transformation to squamous cell carcinoma is rare. Patients must be referred if diagnosis is uncertain, if lesions become thickened or tender or in those with more widespread / severe actinic damage. If SCC is suspected, refer to secondary care urgently
  • Guidance on Actinic Keratosis is available from:
    • Primary Care Dermatology Society (PCDS)*
    • The GPES (General Practice Elective Care Service) has been developed by GP Federations to manage patients in primary care by GPs with enhanced skills. The service includes Actinic Keratosis and local guidance* has been developed by the GPES service
