2.11 Antifibrinolytic drugs and haemostatics

1st choiceTranexamic acid tablets 500mg; injection 100mg/mlDose:
Orally, menorrhagia (initiated when heavy bleeding has started), 1g 3 times daily for up to 4 days; max 4g daily

Slow intravenous injection, local fibrinolysis, 0.5-1g 2 to 3 times daily see BNF

Prescribing Notes

  • The manufacturer recommends regular eye examinations and liver function tests when tranexamic acid is used long-term for hereditary angioneurotic oedema.
