Prescribing Notes
- Bleeding patterns associated with POPs may depend on the progestogen used, the dose, the circulating endogenous estradiol levels and ovulation suppression. Bleeding problems usually decrease with increasing duration of use.
- FSRH produce eligibility criteria for contraceptive use see UKMEC.
- Drug interactions, including enzyme-inducing drugs, should be considered when prescribing contraceptives, see FSRH.
- For missed or late pill guidance, see FSRH.
- Patients aged 16 years and over can order contraception including POPs via SH:24. This is a free HSC funded service where medical eligibility is assessed by HCPs and contraception supplied via post.
- Drospirenone (Slynd®) is a newer POP with a 24-hour window for pill taking that could offer a different bleeding pattern and side effect profile. It is not a formulary choice, but may be an option for individuals that have had problematic bleeding or side effects with other POPs. Please note that there are additional considerations for drospirenone use including caution in users at risk of hyperkalaemia. See FSRH.
